OREGON CITY, Or., Aug. 7 (Special) – August Mautz, 89, civil war veteran, died Sunday at his home at Fourth and High streets.
He was born in Wattenburg, Germany, May 6, 1844, and came to America with his parents when he was 6 years old, locating near Zanesville, O. When he was 18 his older brother married, was drafted into service in the civil war, and August volunteered to take his place in the Union army. He served three years with the 9th Ohio Cavalry.
Upon receiving his honorable discharge, August Mautz returned to Zanesville and was married to Rosina Fritz, moving with his bride to Illinois, and a few years later to Oregon. Mr. Mautz, a cooper by trade, farmed at Maple Lane before retiring about 20 years ago. His wife died in 1913 when the family was residing at Mountain View.
Mr. Mautz was an active member of Meade Post No. 2, G. A. R., before it disbanded a few years ago, and was a member of the Evangelical church.
He is survived by one brother, John Mautz, of Zanesville, O., and by seven children: Mrs. Flora E. Morris and Mrs. Kate Bryant of this city, Mrs. George Hyatt of Pendleton, Mrs. Anna Richards of Tacoma, Lawrence and Albert Mautz of Henrici and George Mautz, address unknown.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 o’clock in the chapel of the Oregon City funeral home, Rev. Rodney A. Sundberg and Rev. F. Wievesick officiating.
