CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIED ON BIRTHDAY OF “ABE” LINCOLN
R. W. PORTER PASSES AWAY AT HIS HOME IN GLADSTONE AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS
R. W. Porter, a veteran of the Civil war and a lifelong admirer of Lincoln, died early Saturday, on the 107th anniversary of the birth of the martyred president. He was 81 years old, and in good health until a few days before his death when he suddenly became ill with la grippe. His advanced age hastened the end.
Mr. and Mrs. Porter celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary January 1 at their home in Gladstone, and received scores of friends and relatives.

Mr. Porter was born in Oneida county, New York, October 7, 1833. Early in the Civil war he enlisted in Company A., 83rd Pennsylvania regiment. He then took up his trade of a blacksmith, which he followed for many years. The family came to Oregon in 1876, settling first at Prineville, and after a year in the central Oregon town, they came to Canemah, living there 26 years. Six years ago they moved to Gladstone.
Besides his widow, Mr. Porter is survived by four children, Clarence Porter, of Fairbanks, Alaska; Charles Porter, of Baker; Mrs. J. B. Labor, of Portland, and Mrs. Elmer Mayville, of Canemah, and several grandchildren. He was a member of the Gladstone Baptist Church.
